The Ad Diet? Feast on Ads?Welcome to The Ad Diet and our little piece of the Internet. We serve up fresh takes on food ads and food marketing. Why the Ad Diet? We consume ads on the daily so although we aren’t physically consuming ads we are still consumers. How fresh? These perspectives are coming from a Marketing student who enjoys analyzing ads and marketing strategies. Prone to overanalyze on the daily, here I focus my efforts on analyzing how food is marketed. Depending on the material, these posts can range anywhere from sweet appreciation to a spicy, sizzling review of all the things that went wrong. Every project requires tools, and I am writing these posts with two primary ones. In addition to public image, ethics often comes in play with regards to marketing to children. In Canada there is also an advisory board called Ad Standards that controls what ads are allowed to be put out and ads have to conform to these regulations. They actually have a package on their website called the Canadian Children’s Food and Beverage Advertising Initiative from 2019 so ads are regulated. The Impact of Presentation Senses are important to the consumer experience and in my opinion what food really boils down to is does it taste good? Since taste is not a sense that can be engaged in most forms of marketing, presentation is a big aspect of food marketing. There’s a lot that goes into the production of food ads from food stylists to video planning and diving into how these elements have been carefully crafted will be interesting. Different Media Advertising food without a visual is an interesting challenge and we will look at ads across different mediums. Although the ads on social media are likely first to come to mind when you think of ads, marketing is still done through other methods. Does it work? At the end of the day, marketing and ad creation is about getting the consumer to respond to that call to action and purchase the product. Evaluating how effective an ad is means asking a few questions:
Educational Content Using course material and material from the Under the Influence podcast, these posts will also provide a behind the scenes look at the different marketing theories and concepts that are applied.
